What I Read | February

Yep, it's that time again to share with you what I read in the last month!

At the end of last month when I was in London I finished the book that I was reading, Lovie, Rosie (full review here) so while in Westfield I decided to take a quick trip into WHSmith to search for a new one. The process of buying a book really varies for me, sometimes I endlessly research a certain genre that I'm interested in or like this time or else I just go in and buy a book that catches my eye. While in WHSmith I was obviously feeling the crime/ mystery genre that day as I picked up two books from that genre. I am very interested to see what works for you in terms of buying books, do you prefer going into a shop and buying the one with the most visually appealing cover or do you do plenty of research and plan your purchases? I ask you this because personally, I love finding little gems that nobody else has read but other times it can turn into a bit of a flop and a waste of time.

Anyway, the book that I read this month was 'Elizabeth is Missing' by Emma Healey. As I am truly awful at describing novels, I will leave you with this quite detailed synopsis from GoodReads!

"In this darkly riveting debut novel—a sophisticated psychological mystery that is also a heartbreakingly honest meditation on memory, identity, and aging—an elderly woman descending into dementia embarks on a desperate quest to find the best friend she believes has disappeared, and her search for the truth will go back decades and have shattering consequences.

But no one will listen to Maud—not her frustrated daughter, Helen, not her caretakers, not the police, and especially not Elizabeth's mercurial son, Peter. Armed with handwritten notes she leaves for herself and an overwhelming feeling that Elizabeth needs her help, Maud resolves to discover the truth and save her beloved friend.
This singular obsession forms a cornerstone of Maud's rapidly dissolving present. But the clues she discovers seem only to lead her deeper into her past, to another unsolved disappearance: her sister, Sukey, who vanished shortly after World War II.
As vivid memories of a tragedy that occurred more fifty years ago come flooding back, Maud discovers new momentum in her search for her friend. Could the mystery of Sukey's disappearance hold the key to finding Elizabeth?"

So what did I like about the book?
Although I didn't fall in love with the characters, I really felt a connection to Maud, the elderly lady and the novel's main character. The novel truly highlights the devastating illness that is dementia and her vulnerability as nobody takes her seriously in her everyday life.
I thought had a very unique point of view. As it was written through Maud's eyes, it was nothing like I had ever read before as her forgetfulness was apparent which made it very interesting.
I liked the way the novel kept switching from present day when Elizabeth is missing, to back when Maud was a teenager, when Sukey was missing.
The author was very descriptive and brought some of the images and scenarios in the novel to life very effectively.

What I didn't like about the book..
I wasn't drawn to it, I didn't feel the need to get stuck into this book on my train journey home.
I thought it dragged a bit, although necessary, it got very repetitive as Maud forgot certain things and it would have to be repeated.
I found that it wasn't a very good mystery novel, although it claims to be the main theme I found the plot quite obvious and predictable.

Even though the good seems to overwrite the bad here, I still wasn't very impressed with this book. In my opinion, it was just an ok read that I will probably forget about in years to come. Read it if you have an interest in the illness dementia but other than that, you can find a much better read!

I'm always looking for book recommendations so please tell me your favourites in the comments below..

My Early Morning Makeup

Wednesday 25 February 2015

My Early Morning Makeup
I am in no way a morning person. I tend to cling to my duvet for as long as I can and then have a massive rush to get ready in 15 minutes.. Thanks to 9am lectures I have figured out this quick and easy makeup for that morning rush so that I look a bit more put together walking out the door.

After moisturising, I grab my Tarte Amazonian clay full coverage airbrush foundation and rub it in circular motions all over my face with the Airbuki Bamboo Powder Foundation Brush. As it is a powder foundation, it gives me enough coverage to cover any redness and even out my skin tone in record time, it literally takes less than two minutes! Moving onto concealer I use my MAC Pro Longwear Concealer to cover up my dark circles, a product I will always repurchase as it has such high coverage and doesn't crease.

For brows I use my Soap and Glory Brow Archery, again nothing new but I use the pencil side to fill in any sparse areas of my eyebrows. For eyes, one step that I never miss is curling my eyelashes as it makes me look much more awake than I actually am.. For this I just use one from Primark but I really want to get my hands on the Shu Uemura eyelash curler as apparently it is a huge game changer. I then use my  L'Oreal Telescopic Mascara as it makes my eyelashes look super long.

So this is generally all I have time to do in terms of makeup when rushing around in the mornings, what are your go to makeup items when you're in a rush?!

FOTD | Berry Lips and Olive Green Eyes

Saturday 21 February 2015

FOTD | Berry Lips and Olive Green Eyes

BASE
To prime, I used my all time favourite Professional by Benefit, I tend to have quite visible pores but this thankfully makes them disappear. On top I used the foundation of the moment, the Nars Sheer Glow (full review here) as I was going for quite a dewy, medium coverage. I applied it with the Tarte Buffer Airbrush Finish Foundation brush, it is so dense so it really works the foundation into the skin as I find the Sheer Glow takes quite a while to blend. To conceal my awful under eye circles, I used the Collection Lasting Perfecting concealer in light. It does its best to cover them but I still have yet to master how to get them fully covered up. To set everything I put the Rimmel Stay Matte on my T zone and under my eyes. If anyone has any powder recommendations please let me know, I have never branched out and as my Stay Matte is coming to an end I would love to try something new! For brows I used my Soap and Glory Brow Archery as I do everyday.

CHEEKS
As I have been wearing fake tan the last few days, I needed to add that bit of warmth to my face with my favourite bronzer from the Sleek Contour Kit. I applied it on my temples, down the side of my face and on my neck with a big fluffy brush. To contour, I used the same bronzer with possibly my most exciting purchase of the month, the Real Techniques 301 Flat Contour Brush! It is part of the Bold Metals Collection so it's a new release and from the first time I saw it I couldn't wait to buy it. It was my first time ever using it, but it fit perfectly into the hollows of my cheeks and I am so glad I took the plunge and bought it. As we move swiftly onto blush I have a confession, I'm really not that into blush. I have a total of two blushes and I only use one of them, which is Peachtwist by MAC so I am in desperate need of blush recommendations so please leave your favourites below! Moving on to highlighter, I used my all time favourite highlighter, the MSF in Soft and Gentle by MAC.

EYES
From reading this segment it is very apparent that I have a thing for MAC eye products, eyeshadows in particular! To prime my eyes I used the MAC paint pot in Bare Study which is a shimmery, champagne colour. I always use this to prime my eyes as it is really build-able and when I use it I find my eyeshadow stays put a lot longer. Over that I used the colour Retro Speck as it is a very similar colour. Through my crease I put my favourite colour at the moment, Sumptuous Olive. It is a beautiful olive green colour which can look bronze with a green tint when applied. This is a really easy way to incorporate more colour into your eyeshadow and as it is such a versatile shade, it can be worked into so many looks. To define my eyes a bit more I applied Coquette, a matte, cool toned, medium brown shade and added some Sumptuous Olive underneath my eye. For eyeliner, I put a thin line of the L'Oreal Superliner on my upper lash line with the L'Oreal Telescopic mascara on my eyelashes.

LIPS
Possibly my favourite product from this whole look, I wore the Rimmel Kate Moss Lipstick in 107. If you read my recent post about all of the drugstore items I can't live without you will have seen that this got a mention. As you can see it is a gorgeous berry shade and it such good quality for the price.

I hope you enjoyed this FOTD and don't forget to leave some of your recommendations below!

Essie - Chinchilly

Thursday 19 February 2015

Essie - Chinchilly

When it comes to nail varnish, I'm always drawn to Essie. With sleek packaging, huge range of colours and great formulation- what's not to like?

For Christmas I received the colour Chinchilly in a set with Bahama Mama from Lizzy. In the post about Bahama Mama I admitted that I am not drawn to nail varnish as much as other beauty products but I think it is because when I get a good one, I stick to it!

Over the last few weeks I have been loving this colour, I've hardly taken it off. It is a gorgeous grey colour with slight purple undertones and two coats makes it completely opaque. I find that this goes with pretty much everything I'm wearing and it also matches up with the very gloomy weather we have been having.

Similarly to other Essie nail varnishes, I get about 4 days out of this colour without it chipping.

What is your favourite Essie nail varnish?

February Wish List

February Wish List
Feb Wish List

So it is that time again when I share with you all of the things on my current wish list. Recently I have given myself the challenge of going on a spending ban.. yep you heard me right. Over the last few weeks I have spent way too much money and to be honest, I don't even see it go until I'm looking at my bank balance at the end of the week. For my spending ban I am not allowing myself to buy any clothes, makeup (or anything related to makeup *cough cough* Muji drawers), and I'm even going to try cut out takeaways. If I have enough will power, this will last until my birthday at the end of March and hopefully then I will be able to purchase all of these wonderful things that I'm about to share with you all.. Lets get started!

Yellow Plastic Mac - Topshop
I know I know this is very.. out there but I absolutely love it! I saw this jacket for the first time back in London a few weeks ago and I have been eyeing it up ever since. Lets be honest, it's perfect for Irish weather and if I end up going to any festivals during the summer, it's just too cute.

Box Pleat Bikini - Topshop
From a jacket appropriate for downpours to a bikini, such a contrast but I can't help myself get so excited for summer when I see all of the bikinis coming into the shops. Even though I don't have a holiday booked, I can be prepared just in case right?

Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Red Carpet Red
As a lover of the Charlotte Tilbury lipstick in Glastonberry (post about it here) I really want to try more shades from the range. Although pricey, these lipsticks have such good lasting power. Ever since losing my Russian Red lipstick I have wanted to repurchase it however recently I have been drawn to this lipstick and Love Liberty as they both look amazing on Lily Pebbles!

Yes Please by Amy Poehler
Ive heard so many great reviews about this book and I really want to see what all of the hype is about.

Kate Spade 'One in a Million' Initial Pendant Necklace
Possibly at the top of my wish list, I have been eyeing this necklace up for months! I was initially looking for a simple gold necklace that I can wear everyday and I think this is the one.

Zoeva Luxe Complete Set
Ah makeup brushes, a beauty lovers dream! I have been eyeing this set up for months but haven't yet got around to buying it. I have yet to try Zoeva brushes but I have yet to hear a bad review so I can't wait to buy these and try them out.

Birkenstock Arizona Two Strap Sandal
Along with the Kate Spade necklace, these are possibly at the top of my wish list.. Such an ugly shoe but I absolutely love them! I think if styled right they can be really nice for the summer months.

Mahogany Teakwood Candle - Bath and Body Works
Candles don't come better than this.. I picked it up when I was in America last summer and when it ran out I was devastated (ok slight over exaggeration) and I have held back purchasing it for some reason because I find it quite difficult to justify the price. If you love the smell of Abercrombie, you'll love this candle because when you're burning it, it smells like you just walked into the shop.. Pure heaven!

Although not featured above, I have been dying to try out some Missguided activewear. As I am running the Womens Mini Marathon in June, I think some new work out clothes would help me along with my training and motivate me a bit more. I really like the Active Mesh Panel Gym Leggings in Grey along with the Active Cross Back Sports Bra in Coral.

I hope you have enjoyed this wish list post and thanks for reading!

Drugstore Makeup I Can't Live Without

Drugstore Makeup I Can't Live Without

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about the high end makeup products that I can't live without, my holy grail products so today I thought I would share my top picks from the drugstore. Boots is just one of them shops that I can't just pass by, I have to go in for a browse even though I've been down the aisles a thousand times. Trying new products is always exciting but these are the products that I will always repurchase and use on an everyday basis.

Kate Moss 107 Lipstick
Ah a cult favourite that I'm sure you have seen and heard about a thousand times but it is genuinely worth the hype. It is a gorgeous berry shade with a satin finish as I don't find it to be as matte as some of the MAC lipsticks but it lasts unbelievably well for the price. This lipstick is the best I have found on the drugstore front and I doubt it will leave the top spot any time soon.

Soap and Glory Brow Archery
A product that has featured many a time on my blog but I just can't get enough of it. One side of the product is a felt tip (which looks very scary but it surprisingly great) and the other side is like a crayon/ pencil. I mainly used the felt tip side however I think that was because it was running out so it was less harsh. Since repurchasing it, I have ditched the felt tip on an everyday basis and have started using the other side as it is much more natural. This is a great day to night product as if you wanted stronger, more defined brows in the evening, the felt tip side is perfect.

L'Oreal Telescopic Mascara
Hands down, I have never found a better mascara. I look for length when I'm purchasing a mascara rather than volume as my lashes are so short (but growing considerably thanks to RapidLash) and this mascara gives me just that. I tried several other mascaras when this ran out but nothing compared to it.

Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer
Another product that you probably are sick of hearing about but lets be honest, for the price it is so good! It's pretty much a not as good version of the MAC Pro Longwear Concealer but I love it because it's a fraction of the price. The best thing about this product is the coverage, say goodbye to dark circles if you wear this!

CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation
I picked this up during the summer as I had heard American beauty guru's rave about this so I had to try it. I honestly love this foundation as it has great lasting power and has a build-able medium coverage with a dewy finish. Although it claims it is a primer, foundation and concealer all rolled into one, I use concealer under my eyes with this product as it doesn't cover my dark circles up fully. The only thing that annoys me is that the shade is too light for me, there was just so many shades and I panicked and picked up one that is very light. As a result I have to mix it with another darker foundation which can be a bit of a pain in the morning.. As it is only available in the states it is quite hard to get your hands on but if you ever get the chance, make sure to pick it up!

I hope you enjoyed my top picks from the drugstore, be sure to follow me on Bloglovin so you can keep up to date with all of my new posts!!

Matte Eyeshadow Obsession | My Top Picks

Friday 13 February 2015

Matte Eyeshadow Obsession | My Top Picks
I always thought I was a shimmery eyeshadow gal. When heading to the MAC counter, it never struck me to get a matte shade as I was always captivated with the shimmers but lately I can't get enough of the mattes!

I think it all started when I started borrowing (she might say stealing) my mam's Naked palette. I was just a bit fed up of my Naked 2 palette and I quickly became obsessed with all of the warm shades. In particular I constantly use the matte shades 'Naked' and 'Buck'. Even though there can be a lot of fall out, I can get passed that, they're just so versatile! As you can see, I have hit pan on 'Naked' (sorry mam) so it is beyond me what I am going to do when it runs out. 'Naked is the lighter of the two and it great for a transitional colour in the crease. 'Buck' is darker with a slightly red tone running through it. Whenever I'm in a rush and need to do heavier makeup I always throw these in the crease along with a darker matte brown and a bold lip and I'm out the door.
The darker matte brown that I apply to the outer corners of my eyes over 'Naked' and 'Buck' is 'Sandstone' from the Stila 'In the Light' palette. This shade is described as a 'matte light coco', pretty much your standard medium brown colour. The formulation of this shade is to die for, it is so creamy and pigmented. As it is also quite warm toned, it goes perfect with the Naked palette shades, and pretty much any other shades as it is such a versatile colour.

(L-R) Charcoal Brown, Quarry, Sketch
On to the cool toned shadows, even though I feel I prefer warmer tones, my MAC eyeshadow palette is predominantly cool toned. One of my first MAC eyeshadows, 'Charcoal Brown' has always been one of my favourites. It is a medium brown shade and similar to the others, perfect for the crease. I sometimes forget about it because it is in a duo with 'Omega' as I purchased it for my brows but it eventually made its way onto my eyes and I haven't gone back since! Another shade I constantly reach for is 'Quarry' which is almost like a greyish/ lavender colour. It is such a subtle shade which I use to deepen up the crease for a more natural daytime look however it can also be used as a transition shade for a night look. I love the texture of this shade, it's so creamy! A dupe for this would be the shade 'Tease' from the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette.

Lastly I have a bit of a cheat shade, it is MAC 'Sketch'. As it's a velvet finish it has slight shimmer (emphasis on the slight) so I use it as I would a matte shade. It's a gorgeous burgundy shade and I love it to deepen up the crease and to add the slightest bit of colour to any look.

As a beauty lover, my beauty wish list is always overflowing with so many new items that I want to try. The matte eyeshadows I really want to try are MAC's 'Swiss Chocolate' which is a muted reddish brown and 'Espresso', a muted golden brown. On to Inglot, I have my eye on the shade 357 which is a warm toned medium brown (can you tell I like medium browns?). Lastly something I am dying to get my hands on but can't get, the Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte palette. Ah I'm in love, you don't need much more than this in your life in terms of matte eyeshadows!

Well wasn't that a hefty post?! If you got the the end, thanks for reading and I'd love to know what matte eyeshadows are your favourites so leave them in the comments below..

Tan Organic Review

Tan Organic Review
Lately my days have been filled with searching for bikinis on ASOS and googling summer holiday destinations.. Once christmas is over i quickly become fed up with the dreary weather and just can't wait to get some sun!

As the Irish weather doesn't seem to know what the sun is, I have resulted in getting my tan from a bottle instead. The lovely team from Tan Organic came to the rescue and kindly sent me some of their Self Tanning Oil* to try.

First off lets talk packaging, I love it! The wooden lid is adorable and I really like the frosted glass effect of the bottle. Tan Organic is a brand that only contains natural and organic ingredients, plus it's Irish (what more could you want?).

A tanning oil was a new concept to me, I am so used to using the Sally Hanson spray that I have never ventured very far outside of that, so I found at the beginning it was hard to get the hang of. As it is an oil, it is very runny and was a bit messy for me at the start (so I would recommend standing on a towel) but I quickly got used to it and wasn't a problem. The benefit of it being an oil is that it distributes really easily and evenly.

The thing that I was most impressed with was the drying time, it was so quick! The thing I hate the most about moisturising your body or fake tanning is the waiting around for it to dry (*cough, cough* St. Tropez Everyday Gradual Tan!!), but this product just sunk into my skin after a minute or two and was fully dry.

Tan Organic claims that there is no 'fake tan smell', I would have to disagree with that as there was a smell but it wasn't bad at all however that can depend from person to person as fake tan smells don't bother me too much.

After one layer, it provides a really nice light glow on your skin, perfect for everyday. By adding a second layer it goes much darker, more suited to a night out. I would say it is the colour of Sally Hanson medium tan without the powdery finish, it doesn't rub off and go all over your clothes!

Over about a week the tan faded, for the most part it faded really evenly. Some places, like my wrists, went a bit patchy but to be honest, I expected that!

Overall I am so impressed with this tan and I will definitely be using it as I patiently wait for the summer months and hopefully a sun holiday!

What is your favourite fake tan?!

MAC 'All Fired Up' Lipstick

Sunday 8 February 2015

MAC 'All Fired Up' Lipstick

When I was in London I don't know what came over me, all of a sudden the need to buy a bright pink lipstick overcame me, a colour I have never even thought of before. While I was going for 'Girl About Town', Lizzy picked up 'All Fired Up' which looked gorgeous so on a whim I bought them both.

Well am I glad I bought this lipstick! I'm totally in love with this colour and it may even be my new favourite MAC lipstick. It is a retro matte finish so yep, it's extremely drying, maybe even more drying than Ruby Woo (if thats possible) but the colour makes up for it. I can't decide whether it's pinky red or reddish pink.. you can make that call but it's perfect for Spring and I know with a tan, this will look gorgeous! Unlike many fuchsia lipsticks, this has very warm undertones which I prefer as it doesn't wash me out.

I really would recommend checking out this lipstick the next time you're at a MAC counter, I can't get enough of it!

Apologies for my oh so crazy hair in this photo, it is getting the chop soon (which is well overdue!!).

What is your favourite MAC lipstick?!

#BeautyChatLIVE

#BeautyChatLIVE
Ooh the excitement of writing this post is too much! A few weeks ago the queens of beauty blogging Lily and Anna announced that they were taking their #BeautyChat series on tour where they host it live in several Space NK. stores around the UK and Ireland. As a huge fan of the pair I couldn't wait for the tickets to go on sale. In fact, Lizzy and I were the first ones to get tickets for the Dublin session (too keen? Nah just over excited!). The tickets cost €15 which was redeemable in store afterwards, perfect for all of us beauty lovers.

I genuinely had the best time at the event. We were offered champagne on arrival (very sophisticated I know) and after a few minutes Lily and Anna came out to start the Q&A. They answered some twitter questions and then some from the group as we all gathered around. Afterwards, we could shop around and have a chat.

I'm finding it hard to put in to words how great the event was, every aspect of it. The Space.NK event team were fabulous, so helpful and chatty. As the group was so small we all got a chance to have a good chat with Lily and Anna as well as comfortably shop around the store. The girls were absolutely lovely, we chatted about university, nail varnish and all things beauty! It was just so nice to be able to chat away with them. So chilled, so great, ahh I just had a ball!

I ended up buying the Living Proof Prime Style Extender (a recommendation from Anna) which I have yet to try but I'll report back to you about it ASAP!

So thanks a million to Space NK. for organising such a great event and giving me the opportunity to meet my all time favourite bloggers!

Did you attend #BeautyChatLIVE? What did you think of it?

London Beauty Haul

Wednesday 4 February 2015

London Beauty Haul
Last week Lizzy and I packed our bags and jetted off to London for a few days. Lizzy's auntie was kind enough to take us in and let us stay for our trip, which meant we were able to spend time with her ADORABLE two year old cousin and squeeze in a bit of shopping!

Ok ok I'll admit it, I really didn't need anymore makeup, plus this trip was meant to be about buying clothes but I just couldn't help myself splurging on a few new items.

We'll start off with the high end products. When in the duty free on the way home, Lizzy and I had some money to spare, we were extremely overtired and our flight was delayed.. So what does that mean?! Buy two new MAC lipsticks of course! I purchased 'All Fired Up' on the right which is a Retro Matte finish and 'Girl About Town' on the left which is an amplified finish (more detailed posts about these coming soon!).

In Boots the first place I headed to was the Soap and Glory stand. I repurchased Brow Archery because mine was running out and it is just so quick and easy to use on college mornings (especially when I have to get up for 9am lectures!).

I also picked up the Supercat eye liner pen on a whim because I have heard so much about it and so far I'm loving it. The struggle to do a decent winged eye liner is real but this product makes it a whole lot easier.

Lastly I picked up one of my favourite mascaras, the L'Oreal Telescopic because I hate the mascara I'm currently using. It gives such length to your lashes and keeps them in place all day.

When we visited London in August, Bioderma was at the top of my wish list. Thanks to Lizzy, we found a pharmacy called John Bell and Croyden off Oxford Street that stocks it so what do we do? Buy a litre of it.. It is my favourite makeup remover so I figured a litre will last me a long time right?! (Bear with me while I try justify it.....)

I hope you enjoyed seeing the few beauty items I picked up in London!

Have you picked up any makeup bits lately?!

My Personalised Phone Case

My Personalised Phone Case

There is something so nice about a personalised phone case so when I recently got the opportunity get a personalised phone case by Mr. Nutcase I jumped at the chance. The photo I chose is possibly one of my favourite photos, it's a snap of Brighton beach last summer. The weather was perfect as we stood overlooking the beach from the pier.

I chose the Ultra Light Weight Slimline case* for my iPhone 4s. The thing that surprised me the most about this case was the quality of the photo, it was amazing! I took it on my iPhone so I wasn't expecting it to be the best quality but the company did an amazing job of making it look so crisp and clear. As the name of the case suggests, it's very slim and not bulky at all yet the plastic is quite good quality.

My only complaint about this phone case is that it doesn't come up over the sides of my phone and I'm sure if you're an Apple lover you know that the screen is... vulnerable to say the least. When using this case I'm always afraid that if I drop it the screen will pay the price!

If you want your own personalised phone case (or any other case for that matter) you can get one at Mr. Nutcase here

January Favourites

January Favourites
As the gloomiest month has drawn to a close and the evenings are getting brighter it can only mean one thing.. It's that time to share my January favourites with you all!

I have a full review of this foundation here so I won't go on for ages about it. I love pretty much everything about it- the coverage, the finish, the lasting power.. I can see why it is so highly recommended! The price was the only shame, along with the fact that you have to buy the pump separately (come on NARS!).

Since using new higher coverage foundations this month, I have completely gone off using my beauty blender and rekindled my love with an old favourite of mine, the Expert Face Brush. I love how dense this brush is and it blends in my foundation brilliantly!

Oh my aren't these just fabulous! I had been eyeing them up since early last year (I think they may have even featured in some of my wish lists?!) but I am over the moon that I actually took the plunge and bought them. Ive been wearing them most days since I got them, including a four day shopping trip to London and they were a dream to walk around in! Although it was difficult parting with the cash, it was so worth it as the boots are such good quality.

That is everything I have been loving this month (apologies that it was so short)!
What were your January favourites?!
